Read MoreIn recent years we’ve collectively become much more conscious of the importance of mental health. We have learned about depression, anxiety, and more deep-seated clinical conditions. We have learned that the support and treatment of counsellors, psychologists and doctors is a vital part of responding to mental health challenges. Christian counsellors or Christian psychologists are an important part of the network of support for good mental health.
Christian counsellors like secular counsellors, can help us identify, navigate and respond to challenges in our lives. That’s true whether we are dealing with clinical mental health conditions or simply the day-to-day difficulties of life in a challenging time.
A Christian counsellor will incorporate a Christian worldview and a faith-informed response into their work with you. They will understand, acknowledge, and take seriously your faith as part of the counselling journey. They’ll also bring biblical and spiritual wisdom to the situation, adding these timeless insights to modern approaches to counselling and support.
To help you dig a little deeper, we have explored the topic of Christian counselling in a series of in-depth articles covering both general and specific topics. Here are the topics we have:
Like any good counselling experience, it involves you working with a Christian counsellor or psychologist to understand and explore the issues with which you need support.
The critical first step is acknowledging that you’re wrestling with something deep and challenging, and that support will be helpful for healthy outcomes. Reaching out to a Christian counsellor or psychologist, far from a sign of weakness, is a decision of courage that enables you to take proactive steps to a healthier life.
From there, most counselling or psychology relationships follow a similar rhythm.
They’ll start with you disclosing something about the topic, question or challenge you want to address. Relationship building with the counsellor is the vital next part of the process, followed by working to fully assess and understand the problem. Once there is a clear understanding, you can work together to set some goals and get into the meat of the counselling conversations. Finally, there is a process of evaluation and conclusion.
These steps are fluid and you’ll sometimes move backwards and forwards through the stages.
For some, in rural and remote communities, or where getting out and about is challenging, online counselling offers a good alternative to face-to-face appointments.
Many Christian counsellors offer services via telephone or using video-conferencing platforms such as Zoom or FaceTime. Many of us have learned to be quite comfortable in these online settings over the last few years – and your counsellor can help determine if online Christian counselling is the right approach for you. Start by contacting your local church or Christian counsellor to find out more.
Along with paid professional services, you may be able to access free counselling support. For clinical/medical support, for example, your GP can help identify funded support services. Your local church pastoral care team or pastor/minister will be able to support you with some topics and questions.
There is a range of free help telephone or online services available in Australia.
